Starting a business
Common questions
How do I start a business in New Zealand?
Start with an idea that suits your skills, test that people will pay for it, and check the numbers work. Then choose a structure (usually sole trader or company), sort your tax with IRD, open a business bank account, and launch with a simple plan for your first customers. The free business launch tool walks you through each step.
Should I be a sole trader or a company?
A sole trader is the simplest and cheapest way to start, but you and the business are legally the same. A company keeps business debts separate from your personal assets but has more paperwork. Many people start as a sole trader and change later. An accountant can help you decide.
Do I need to register for GST?
You must register for GST if your turnover is, or is likely to be, over $60,000 in a 12-month period. You can choose to register earlier. Check the details on the IRD website.
How much does it cost to start a business in NZ?
It depends on the business. Many service businesses can start for under $1,000, while businesses with stock, equipment or premises need more. Test your idea cheaply before you spend big.
Should I start as a side hustle?
Often, yes. Starting alongside a job lets you test demand and build your first customers while you still have an income. Many people go full time once the business reliably covers a set share of their pay.
