Common questions
How does the career change tool work?
You tap the skills, strengths and areas of work that fit you, plus the sectors you're drawn to and how you want to work. The tool compares your picks with 39 roles and ways to work for yourself, then ranks your best matches and gives you a practical first step for each. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere.
Am I too old to change careers?
Rarely. Experience is an advantage when you frame it well. What matters is choosing a move your skills carry into, and telling that story clearly to a hiring manager.
Do I need to retrain to change careers in New Zealand?
Sometimes, but often less than you think. Many moves, like into project management, operations, customer success or business analysis, rely on skills you already have. Check what transfers first, then fill specific gaps with short courses rather than starting from scratch.
How long does a career change take?
For a move into a related role, often three to six months of focused effort: a clear direction, a rewritten CV and LinkedIn, and practice telling your story. Bigger moves that need a qualification take longer, so it can help to step across in stages.
Should I go out on my own instead?
Maybe. Test it small before you leap: one paying client or a pre-sale while you still have an income. The tool includes nine ways to work for yourself, and CareerMate's small business coaching can help you set up.
How can CareerMate help with a career change?
Chris Casey is an ICC-certified coach who's still working full time, leading marketing and technology teams across New Zealand and Australia, and hiring for these roles. Coaching helps you choose a direction, rewrite your CV and LinkedIn around transferable skills, and practise interviews. Start with a free 20-minute call.
